Komodo Boat Trip Booking Policy: Everything About Payments and Cancellations

Planning a tropical getaway to see the legendary Komodo dragons? Understanding the payment and cancellation terms for your Komodo boat trip is the best way to protect your money and avoid stressful surprises. Because boats are limited and highly regulated, booking policies are very strict. Here is what you need to know before you pay.

Payment Policy

Securing a boat in Labuan Bajo requires planning. Boat operators use your money to buy park permits, secure fuel, and hire the crew before you arrive.

  • Deposit Requirement: A 30% to 50% non-refundable deposit is required to lock in your boat and travel dates.
  • Final Payment: The remaining balance must be paid 14 to 30 days before the trip departures, depending on whether you choose a shared or private boat.
  • Payment Methods: Most operators accept Bank Transfers, Wise, PayPal, or Credit Cards (note that credit cards often have a 3% transaction fee).

Cancellation Terms

If you need to cancel your trip, operators apply a strict timeline. The closer you are to the departure date, the less money you get back.

  • More than 15 days before the trip: You lose your initial deposit, but any extra balance paid will be refunded.
  • 8 to 50 days before the trip: A 50% cancellation fee of the total trip price applies.
  • Less than 7 days before the trip: No refunds are given (100% cancellation fee). The boat cannot be rebooked on short notice, so the slot is lost.

Force Majeure & Weather Cancellations

Nature can be unpredictable. Here is what happens if the weather turns bad:

  • Harbor Closures: The Indonesian Coast Guard (Syahbandar) sometimes closes the harbor due to high waves or strong winds.
  • The Policy: If the coast guard stops boats from sailing, your trip will be rescheduled. If you cannot change your dates, the operator will issue a partial refund (total price minus any non-refundable government permit fees already spent).

Tips to Protect Your Trip

  • Buy Travel Insurance: Make sure your insurance covers “Trip Cancellation” and “Adventure Activities” so you can claim your money back if you get sick.
  • Check the Inclusions: Always double-check if government national park entry fees are included in your payment or if you need to bring extra cash.
